About us

Capella Sancta Maria is a professional vocal ensemble specialized in music of the Renaissance.

Based in Amsterdam, we work on a project basis, selecting programs which are both meaningful and enjoyable.

We are said to have a warm, intense, vibrant sound.

Madrigals, motets, villancicos and other genres are sung with skill and passion.

We perform mostly a capella, also having enjoyed successful collaborations with instrumental ensembles,

like the Royal Wind Music (Amsterdam) and La Caravaggia (Barcelona).

Capella Sancta Maria has performed in many important festivals, both inside and outside the Netherlands,

like Musica Antica da Camera (The Hague), Festival Oude Muziek (Utrecht), Festival de Música Antigua (Sevilla),

Festival Internacional de Arte Sacro (Madrid) or Espazos Sonoros (Galicia)

Historically informed, aesthetically inspired, Capella Sancta Maria breaths life into music.

Enrique López-Cortón,

artistic director

I was born in Spain, in La Coruña, a small city in Galicia. I started to play piano around six. Twenty years later, in Barcelona, I took my piano diploma (M.mus) and discovered the fascinating world of choir. I started to sing and conduct with Manuel Cabero; his mastership and musical sensibility were captivating.

At the age of 30 I moved to Amsterdam to explore the repertoire before Bach. I studied singing with Xenia Mejier and Claron McFadden. Then I met Rebecca Stewart: her extensive knowledge and her love for chant and middle age music were contagious.

I also conduct major choir and orchestra works,  like Bach´s St John Passion and B-minor Mass, Mozart´s Requiem and Mass in C minor, Beethovens´s Mass in C major or his "Meeresstille und glückliche fahrt"
